Injury cases

Harmed in a nursing home

A fall nobody can explain. A bedsore that wasn't treated. A parent who stopped eating and no one called. Something happened, and the chart usually says what.

We take falls, bedsores, dehydration and weight loss, medication errors, wandering and elopement, and abuse by staff or other residents, in nursing homes, assisted living and rehab centers. Often the family is still caring for the person, or grieving them, so we keep meetings short and come to you.

We get the full chart, the care plan and the staffing records, and have a nurse or doctor read them. Then we tell you plainly what we found.

Start here

If you think something is wrong

  1. 01

    Write down what you saw

Dates, injuries, who you spoke to and what they said. A notebook is enough.

  2. 02

    Take photos

Of injuries and of the room, if you can do it without upsetting anyone.

  3. 03

    Ask for the chart

You may have a right to it as family or as the person's representative. We can ask for you.

  4. 04

    Think about safety first

If your parent is in danger now, call the facility's administrator and the state's complaint line today.

Questions

Nursing home abuse: questions we hear

Will my parent be treated worse if we bring a claim?

Retaliation is against the rules, and we watch for it. Many families also move their parent first, and we can help think that through.

My parent has died. Is it too late?

Not necessarily. A family member or the estate may be able to bring a claim, but deadlines apply, so call soon.

The home says the fall couldn't be prevented. Is that true?

Sometimes. The chart, the care plan and the staffing records show whether the home did what it said it would.
